Drought Watch

Drought levels are based on precipitation, flows in streams, groundwater levels and soil moisture; counties under a watch typically experience dry conditions in at least three of those areas. Pennsylvania is encouraging residents to reduce nonessential water use by 5-10% or three to six gallons daily.

Conserving water is always a good practice, but during drought conditions it is a necessity.

Smaller, everyday adjustments you can make:

  • Turn off the water while brushing teeth, shaving and doing dishes.
  • Take shorter showers- a standard shower head uses about 2.5 gallons per minute
  • While waiting for water to "warm up" collect it in a plastic jug to use later.
  •  Water houseplants, with unconsumed instead of putting it down the drain.
  • Store drinking water in the refrigerator instead of running the faucet for cold water.
  • Make sure your dishwasher and washing machine are full before running.
  • Repair dripping faucets and other leaks.
